Vinyl and design fans know about the adventurous covers that accompanied 1950s and 60s recordings from the American classical music label Westminster Records, but lately I’ve been seeing uncredited postings of quite a few of them here on Tumblr. I have to confess that the annual orgy of complaints about the BBC Proms always strikes this American transplant as absurd and hard to comprehend. Say what you will, it is an extraordinary international feast of great music played by the world’s greatest orchestras, and one that, thanks to the unique symbiosis between the performing [...]

New operas seem to be in the air, especially in smaller opera companies. All are coming to fruition whilst going through testing performances and workshops. Next month English Touring Opera kicks off its Autumn tour which includes the premiere of Promised End, Alexander Goehr's opera based on King Lear. The company workshopped the piece at Dartington early this year. And Opera Circus have started a project called Naciketa, this is a work in progress and will lead to an opera by Nigel Osborne and Ariel Dorfman.
